Avengers: Age of Ultron Movie Review

Avengers_Age_of_Ultron

The second of the Avengers movies was one of my, like many others, most anticipated movies of the summer.  And while it is a good movie, it was also a bit of a letdown.  First, the positives.  The acting for the most part was top tier as all of the Avengers are believable in their roles with James Spader being an excellent choice to voice Ultron.  And beyond that, the chemistry among them all is fantastic and just builds on what we saw in the first movie. Several characters receive more character development from the first movie that really worked and added to the movie.  The action scenes are plentiful and entertaining (more on that later) and the comedic parts of the movie worked and were genuinely funny.  It was a large scale summer blockbuster that, for the most part, did its job in entertaining me.

That being said, the movie was a little disappointing.  First of all, the villain Ultron is very underdeveloped.  He shows flashes of being the greatest Marvel villain yet but he is underused in the movie and his motives are somewhat hard to understand.  In addition, coming back to the action scenes, they are very poorly edited and are full of closeups and quick cuts making it extremely hard to follow.  The new characters of Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch seem out of place and sport… subpar accents to say the least.  There were some elements of the plot that just didn’t quite work for me also.

All in all, while it has some flaws, Avengers: Age of Ultron is still a very good movie and a great way to kick off the summer.  Most of my disappointment and complaints probably come from overly astronomical expectations for the movie.  But it did entertain and I look forward to the next Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America Civil War.  Not as good as the first and the negatives do bring the score down a bit. So Ultron ends up getting a 3.75/5 from me (Comparison score: First Avengers- 4.5/5)
