It Follows DVD Review

DVD movie reviews are occasional posts that review recent DVD releases that I did not review while they were in theaters.

it follows

I’m convinced this movie has the scariest premise ever conceived in a movie.

It Follows is about a teenage girl named Jay (Maika Monroe) who contracts something after having sex with her boyfriend.  But it’s no ordinary STD, which would be scary enough.  Instead her boyfriend passes on a demon who takes on human form, follows her wherever she goes, and will kill her if it touches her.  The only way to get rid of it is to pass it on to someone else.  Jay and a group of friends join together to figure out a way to defeat it.

Yes, it sounds insane.  But this movie is actually really good, especially for a horror movie made today.  It’s gripping, intense, and doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares (I can only think of 2) to keep you freaked out the whole time.  It uses long camera shots and is always showing random people in the background that make you wonder if it’s the demon STD or not.  All of the actors, despite being relatively unknowns, do a good job.  This movie has some really scary moments, besides the premise itself.  Most of that comes from being paranoid about who the demon STD is and when it will come for the girl.  It’s a quick 100 minutes which is the perfect length for this movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole runtime.  Some people might not like the somewhat ambiguous ending, but I personally found it perfect for the movie.

I didn’t have many problems with the movie.  One that I did have was that some of the characters were fairly underdeveloped, to the point where I could barely remember anyone’s name.  This is obviously not the biggest deal in a horror movie meant to scare you, but it is a problem nonetheless.  I also don’t think it’s very rewatchable, but then again many horror movies aren’t.

All in all, I had a blast with this movie.  I’m not the biggest fan of the horror genre, especially movies made recently, but this one is really good.  I love that, because of camera angles and long takes, it keeps you paranoid the whole time.  That tension is very refreshing (not to mention scary) and a departure from the jump scares we get in most other movies.  I highly recommend it to horror fans and non-fans.  It Follows gets 4/5.
