Spectre Movie Review

Bond… James Bond is back in all of his shaken martini drinking, Aston Martin driving glory.

Spectre is the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise.  It follows 007 as he tries to track down a secret terrorist organization known as Spectre.  He is forced to do so (mostly) on his own as MI6 is under investigation and the double-o program is shut down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.  I was a little worried because the early reviews have been somewhat mixed (it stands at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes).  I can’t for the life of me figure out why.  There’s a lot to like in this movie.  From the very beginning, you get this fantastic one-shot scene that takes place over easily a full 2 minutes and it’s amazing to watch.  After that, there’s a pretty solid opening scene, a staple of Bond movies.  Daniel Craig is great again as Bond and the supporting cast is good as well.  Bond’s investigation into Spectre is interesting and kept me intrigued the whole time.  There are some awesome action set pieces and stunts to keep you entertained throughout.  I particularly enjoyed the callbacks to the old movies and the twists and turns the movie takes.

There wasn’t too much I didn’t like.  It felt a little long at times but never got to the point of dragging.  Christoph Waltz as the villain is a bit underused but it made sense as to why.  There are a couple times where the subplots between Bond and the Bond girls in the movie didn’t quite work for me, but that’s minor in the grand scheme of things.  I also didn’t like the song over the opening credits in this one.  It was very much a let down after the fantastic song in Skyfall.

I highly recommend this to anyone that likes these movies, particularly those who are fans of the older movies.  You’ll be able to appreciate all the little callbacks more than the average viewer.  It’s way better than Quantum of Solace, and just a touch under Casino Royale and Skyfall.  Spectre gets a 4.25/5.
