Top 10 Movies Based on Books

Top 10 lists will be a list of 10 movies that will be published once a week and will either have to do with a movie coming out that week or just what I want to do at the time.

In honor of the (hopefully) last Hunger Games movie coming out this weekend, I’m doing this week’s Top 10 list on movies that were based in some capacity off books.  There were a couple qualifiers.  I am forcing myself to only choose movies that I knew were based on books at the time of watching them, or shortly thereafter.  So as much as I’d like to put Die Hard on the top of a list for like the fourth time, I didn’t know it was based on a book until fairly recently, far after I had originally seen it.  I am not, however, forcing myself to pick movies based on books I have read because at that point, the list would end up being approximately 2 movies. Anyway, let’s get to my picks.

10. Hunger Games: Catching Fire

– Might as well include one of these since they are the reason I’m doing this list.  This is the only one of these movies so far that I would say is “good”. Moving on.

9. Hunt for Red October

– I enjoy most of the Jack Ryan movies (Patriot Games, Hunt for Red October, Sum of all Fears, parts of Shadow Recruit) based on Tom Clancy’s books to some extent, but this one is by far the best.  Still need a Rainbow Six movie though (I’ve actually read that one).

8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

– As an adult, I enjoy the later movies in this series more than the others due to the darker themes.  This culmination of the series is definitely my favorite.

7. The Shining

– I know they (people who have actually read the book) say the movie and Stephen King’s book are very different, but this is one of the best horror movies ever made. So, it belongs on this list.

6. Gone Girl

– Easily one of my favorite movies of last year, this is one of both David Fincher and Ben Affleck’s best.  It’s a dark but entertaining mystery with some great twists.

5. Silence of the Lambs

– This belongs on most lists for Anthony Hopkins’ performance alone.  His portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is chilling and awesome.

4. Lord of the Rings Return of the King

– Despite the 20 different endings, this is the best of the series.  I like all of them, but this one has the most to offer.

3. The Martian

– This is one of my favorite movies of 2015 so far.  It has a great story, a solid cast, stunning visuals, and a ton of humor. It’s hard not to like it.

2. Casino Royale

– I decided to only put one Bond movie on this list.  And since this is my favorite one, it seemed appropriate for it to be the one on here.

1. Jurassic Park

– Anyone who has followed my blog for any length of time saw this coming. I love this movie and would watch it on repeat for the rest of my life.

Honorable mentions: Carrie (I even enjoyed to remake for what it was), the first Chronicles of Narnia
