The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist Trailer Review

The best horror movie this side of 2000 is getting a sequel. And now we have a trailer for said sequel that is really good… until it blows it in the last 10 seconds.

For my first trailer review of 2016, I felt the need to talk about the trailer for The Conjuring 2 that came out today (see below).  The Conjuring is one of my favorite horror movies of all time and is ripe for a sequel (or sequels), in my opinion.  The are plenty of “true stories” involving famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that can be told.  So, I watched this trailer excitedly hoping for a sneak peek of more of the greatness that is The Conjuring.

For most of the trailer it gives me exactly that.  What made the first movies so great was that it genuinely creeped you out, relying on tension and things like that rather than falling into the jump scare trap.  It’s not that there aren’t jump scares, it’s just that most of them are well executed and add tension, rather than just being a cheap payoff.  Most of this trailer gives me exactly what I wanted.  It has that creepy tension that gave me the chills, especially the conversation between Lorraine Warren and the little girl. Both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as the aforementioned paranormal investigators and look great again.  In short, I was loving the trailer… then the last few seconds happened.  Did it really have to end in the cheap jump scare that I saw coming a mile away? It was doing so well.  It does worry me a bit and makes me wonder if this will move away from what made the first one great and move towards the jump scares to get the audience into the theater.  Because audiences are dumb and like that kind of thing apparently.

With that being said, I am still really looking forward to this.  The fact that director James Wan turned down Fast and Furious 8 to come back to this gives me some faith.  Plus, most of this trailer is great and it is just the first trailer.  There is also no way it can possibly be as bad as Annabelle, right? Right?? We’ll find out whether or not my faith is misplaced this summer.

What did you think of the trailer? Did you like the first Conjuring and are you excited for the sequel? Let me know in the comments.
