Top 10 Years Where the Wrong Movie Won Best Picture

Bonus Top 10 List for you guys this week in honor of the Oscars.  Sometimes the Academy gets the Best Picture right, sometimes they don’t. I’m looking at years where the wrong movie won Best Picture, in my opinion.  The qualifier was that the movie that should have won needed to have at least been nominated.  So even though clearly Top Gun should have won in ’86, Die Hard should have won in ’88, and Jurassic Park should have won in ’93, due to extreme oversights by the Academy, they weren’t even nominated.  I know… I can’t believe it either.  Anyway let’s get to the list.

10. 1941

What won: How Green Was My Valley

What should’ve won: Citizen Kane

I’ll be honest- I’ve never seen either of these.  I know I should have seen Citizen Kane by now and that will be fixed in a few weeks in a history of movies class I’m taking.  The reason it makes the list is the fact that Citizen Kane is seen by many as one of, if not the best movie of all time and I had never even heard of How Green Was My Valley until compiling this list. Really all it made me want to do was make a “That’s what she said” joke.  Look how mature I am.

9. 1977

What won: Annie Hall

What should’ve won: Star Wars

I know it’s somewhat cheating to put one movie over another if I’ve never seen one, but it happens a few times on this list.  Star Wars is the most iconic and influential sci-fi movie of all time.  I’m not even really sure what Annie Hall is.  Ignorance is bliss.

8. 1990

What won: Dances with Wolves

What should’ve won: Goodfellas

Really? A boring, melodramatic Kevin Costner movie over one of the best mob movies of all time?

7. 1997

What won: Titanic

What should’ve won: Good Will Hunting

Good Will Hunting is an incredible story with great performances all around.  Titanic, while a good overall movie, is overrated. Also acceptable: LA Confidential.

6. 1994

What won: Forrest Gump

What should’ve won: Pulp Fiction

I like Forrest Gump a lot and actually think Pulp Fiction is a little overrated.  But to me, Pulp Fiction is still the superior overall movie.  Some would take Shawshank Redemtion here, which would be fine too.

5. 1999

What won: American Beauty

What should’ve won: The Sixth Sense

I tried to watch American Beauty once and couldn’t even make it through the whole thing.  The Sixth Sense has the best performance by a child actor ever, Bruce Willis when he still cared, and one of the best twist endings ever.

4. 2012

What won: Argo

What should’ve won: Zero Dark Thirty

Here’s another one where I actually like the movie that won. A lot.  I just think Zero Dark Thirty is a little better.  I would also put Django Unchained here over Argo, but I think the over the top violence and language hindered its chances.

3. 2010

What won: The King’s Speech

What should’ve won: Pretty much anything else nominated that year, but I’ll pick Inception.

The King’s Speech, while I’m sure powerful to some, is one of the most boring movies ever made.  Inception is one of the most inventive and entertaining movies of recent memory.  Plus, it is still talked about very much today.

2. 2014

What won: Birdman

What should’ve won: Whiplash

Birdman isn’t a bad movie.  It’s just very overrated and it never really grabbed me. Whiplash is one of the best movies I’ve seen in years.

1. 1998

What won: Shakespeare in Love

What should’ve won: Saving Private Ryan

Guess how many times I’ve been talking movies with someone and Shakespeare in Love has come up? Zero. Saving Private Ryan, on the other hand, comes up all the time. Why? Because it’s the best war movie ever made and deserved the trophy this year.

Honorable mentions (Year- what should’ve won over what won): 2002- Gangs of New York over Chicago, 1995- Apollo 13 over Braveheart, 1989- Field of Dreams over Driving Miss Daisy, 1981- Raiders of the Lost Ark over Chariots of Fire, 1939- The Wizard of Oz over Gone with the Wind

Let me know which years the Academy let you down, or feel free to argue with my choices, in the comments.

The other Top 10 List this week: Heist Movies
