With the 4th of July coming up and after watching the pretty bad sequel (review)., I decided to rewatch and review the original alien invasion flick that we all love.
Independence Day, or the odd alternate title ID4, is a ’90s alien invasion movie starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum who must save the world using a… computer virus (There may be spoilers, the movie is 20 years old folks)? It’s a lot more fun than it sounds.
I’ve probably seen this movie 20 times and I love it each time. It’s just good, cheesy fun. It has some of the best special effects for it’s time, which could have possibly made or broke a movie like this. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are always fun to watch and I think they have great chemistry together in the scenes they share. There’s a lot of great humor in here that keeps you chuckling, even if a lot of it is a little cheesy. The story may be simple and clichéd but it is effective enough to make the movie worth watching.
The movie isn’t without its problems. Sure, it spends too much time on side characters no one really cares about, some of the humor falls flat, and the ending doesn’t make much sense. But it’s not like the movie ever tries to pretend to be some perfect Oscar contender. It is aware of its own flaws and plays off of them for its own benefit. It knows exactly what it is and what it wants to accomplish and it succeeds in that regard.
If you want a very entertaining way to spend 2 and a half hours, look no farther than Independence Day. In fact, skip the sequel and just go back and watch (or rewatch) this one. You won’t be disappointed. Independence Day gets a 4.25/5.
As always, comment below and let me know your opinion of this ’90s classic.
