Get Out Movie Review

get out

A movie with a nearly perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is always intriguing to me. I just wasn’t expecting this one to be… well completely wacked out of its mind.

Get Out is about a young black man who goes to meet his white girlfriend’s parents. This goes worse than most meet the parents situations go, which as most men can tell you is saying something. I guess the rest of us can consider ourselves lucky that most of our (ex)girlfriends’ families are only half this insane.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy this movie. Mind you, I had no idea what was going on for most of it but it was still entertaining enough. What it has going for it most is the intrigue and the suspense it provides. I was a bit worried about the tone of the movie after hearing it was a horror movie, a comedy, and a thriller all at once. But somehow it works. It has elements of all those things and they all add to the movie in their own way. In addition, all the acting is good, despite me not really recognizing any of the actors. I initially thought the main girl was the one from Fifty Shades of Grey. But once I saw this girl could actually act, I realized I was mistaken.

There were plenty of things I didn’t necessarily love about the movie. First of all, somehow I had no idea what was going on during the movie, yet it’s completely predictable. I have no idea how that’s possible but apparently it is. Second, I hated the ending. It is really stupid. I won’t spoil anything but even the writers knew it was dumb because they couldn’t come up with a good reason for why it was happening. They just threw in a joke instead. In fact, the whole plot is kind of dumb when you really think about it.

Despite all this, there is enjoyment to be had in this one. It is tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is also the perfect length and isn’t too long. Just don’t take the movie too seriously. Get Out gets a 3.5/5.
