War for the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

war for the planet of the apes

Look out Nolan’s Batman, Lord of the Rings, Toy Story, and the original Star Wars. With this installment, we’ve got a new trilogy in the mix for best ever.

War for the Planet of the Apes is the final installment following Caesar in his fight against the remnants of the U.S. military. This time things get personal and Caesar seeks revenge on the military leader, played by Woody Harrelson.

War is a fantastic final movie in this trilogy. It builds upon the previous movies in all the right ways. The special effects are out of this world good. The previous movies look good, but the technology has clearly improved in this one. I would have a hard time knowing the apes aren’t real if I didn’t know it already. Andy Serkis turns in another amazing motion capture performance with some truly powerful moments. A lot of these take place with Woody Harrelson who is also extremely good as the villain. It’s his best performance in a while and he’s the perfect amount of over the top. There are some really great scenes of action, a lot of heart, and some good lighthearted moments as well. In addition, I never expected there to be so many emotional moments with a movie with apes as the protagonists. But this movie proved that wrong. The movie forces you to see the points of both sides, but ultimately side with one of them.

There isn’t a whole lot wrong with the movie. It is a bit long and drags a bit in the middle. A few minutes could have easily been cut out. There is also a scene towards the end that gets a bit cheesy and feels out of place. Past that, I have no problems with it.

Overall, I was not disappointed with War for the Planet of the Apes. It sucks you in and doesn’t let go. This trilogy doesn’t really have any weak links. It’ll take another viewing or two to decide whether I prefer this or Dawn. But War gets a 4.5/5 from me.
